Baby Born After 4 Hospitals, 230 Miles

Updated: Tuesday, 27 Jul 2010, 11:19 AM EDT
Published : Tuesday, 27 Jul 2010, 11:19 AM EDT

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - A woman from England went through quite the ordeal to give birth to her second child after she was turned away from three hospitals, the Daily Mail reported.

After traveling a total of 230 miles, Helen Ramsey finally gave birth to her son, Dylan, six days after her water broke -- at her local hospital that was a mere 15 miles from her home.

When Ramsey’s water broke seven weeks early, her partner, James Baird, drove her to a hospital that had a specialty care unit for premature infants. They were rejected because the unit was full.

According to The Mail , an ambulance then took Ramsey to another hospital where she waited for two days to be induced before she was told that they had no room either.

Ramsey became emotionally distressed after the third hospital refused to take her because they had a no-induction policy. At that point, she had already traveled 140 miles to deliver her baby.

Her mother, a nurse, finally intervened by calling a local hospital near Ramsey’s home to take her as a patient. The hospital had room and baby Dylan was born.

Ramsey and Baird were shocked when they actually were admitted.

Ramsey told The Mail , “If I was a first-time mum it would have put me off having children for life, it was just heart-wrenching. We went on such a rollercoaster of emotions, at first we were so excited to meet our new arrival but then we were so frustrated and depressed about the situation. Every time you go to a new hospital, you have to be reassessed and they all have different policies, plus you have to wait for all the transfer documents to go through.”

Neil Wilson, Interim Chief Operating Officer, East of England Specialized Commissioning Group said, “We cannot go into the detail of individual patient cases, but acknowledge that this patient's experience does appear to be outside of that experienced by most pregnant women when they show symptoms of early labor.”

England’s National Health Service is investigating.
