A McDowell County Woman Is Killed on Way to Family Funeral

Debris from Falling School Hit Her

DAVY - State Police in Welch have released the name of a woman killed in Wednesday's deadly storm.

Troopers say 35 year-old Patricia Sabo of Big Sandy in McDowell County died when she was hit by falling debris.

Tpr. C.K. Morton, stationed at the Welch Detachment, said Sabo was attending her brother's wake at the Twin Branch Pentecostal Trinity Assembly Church.

When the storm moved in, Sabo was outside near the Twin Branch Pentecostal Christian Academy. The roof of the gymnasium ripped apart and debris crushed Sabo.

Authorities said she died at the scene.

Tpr. Morton said several other people were there, but they were inside vehicles and did not get hurt. Seven vehicles were damaged.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. during the height of the severe weather.

This death compounds the grief Sabo's family is already experiencing.

State Police confirm that Sabo is the sister of 29 year-old Kevin Shirley.

Shirley died Sunday.

Authorities say Shirley attacked a McDowell County Deputy while he was in custody facing burglary charges.

State Police said Shirley stole the officer's weapon and shot and killed himself.
